Hit Someone Football League

Hit Someone Football is "A football league for the rest of us" as described in the Daily Universe last semester (Fall 2010). Even if you don't see yourself playing full-contact football ever, this league is definitely one of the fun things to do in Provo and is something to see while you're here. The players are fierce, competitive, and quite entertaining!

Players are driven to the ground, tackled, and beat up as they continue to play the sport. The benefit of coming to watch these players is that you don't have to sit in a huge stand of seating. You get to be by the sidelines and see the tackles up close. Being this close to the action also fires you up because you will find yourself yelling along with the players on the sidelines. Even at 8:00 in the morning these players are driven by adrenaline and yelling and screaming hoping to intimidate their opponents and motivate their own players to own the other team.

I volunteered to help run the games on one weekend and found myself going back the following weeks just to watch! The spring season will be starting March 26th to April 23rd and it's definitely one of the best things to do in Provo especially as this league is growing. When they first started they had four teams, then the league grew to six, and before the end of last season there were already two more teams wanting to sign up for the Spring 2011 season. With that said, I'm sure the players are going to be more competitive, fierce, and entertaining to watch this upcoming season.

If you are looking to play the sport or just come and watch, you can find information about league sign-ups, game schedules etc. can be found at their website at hitsomeone.com

"The Spot"

I don't know about you, but with the variety of things to do in Provo City it is nice to be able to go somewhere nice and sit and do nothing. However, you can't go just anywhere and do nothing (doing nothing is kind of a big deal.) This just requires you getting a bit creative.

Provo City Spot
I was driving around one night for kicks and found myself heading up a rather steep hill and I was intrigued, so I tried to find the highest point. I finally came to it. (picture below: looking at the spot.)

I got out and wandered around up on that little mound and found that it was flat and offered
fun dating ideas, The view from the spot
good seating looking at this view.

At night you can see the entire valley! This has got to be one of the most beautiful things you can see around here.

Trust me, a place like this (i'm not giving you directions because I don't want to flood my spot; you understand) is an awesome place for a cheap date ideas.

I have found that not only are these places great because they are cheap but they beauty makes for a great memory and wonderful place to revisit to reminsce about first experiences together.

Leave us some comment about some great places that you have found. Have any particularly good spots by Utah Lake? Perhaps some place up Provo, American Fork, or Springville Canyons? Pictures help demonstrate your point as well.

Perhaps we'll have a contest for the best spot in Provo, you submit to us your best picture from your favorite spot. We'll let you know more about this as we figure it out.

On Campus:best wifi connection

Last semester during finals week I felt like someone was out to get me. I normally study on BYU campus in the Tanner building where I have great connectivity with my macbook to BYU’s secure server. For whatever reason that wasn’t the case this time. In a hurry to make best use of my time studying prior to my finals I then went to the next best place to go and study; the library.

For those quick thinkers you probably know what I’m about to say. Going to the library was definitely NOT a good idea. More crowded than the Tanner building, I found myself searching every level of the library trying to find a spot that I could settle on and connect to the Internet.

I should probably point out why it was so important that I had Internet connection. The reason being is I needed to the Google docs! That’s where all the study guides were. (If you haven’t started making use of Google docs while studying I strongly encourage you to do so, it’s been the best thing that’s happened to my college experience).

Once I found what I thought was the perfect spot in the library, I opened up my computer and sure enough, the Internet was SUPER SLOW! Where could I go? I packed my stuff up again and left the library quite frustrated.

I started heading toward the Wilkinson Center when I looked to the left and saw the HFAC (Harris Fine Arts Center). I must have been inspired because I walked in there and found a nice spot to study and the Internet worked beautifully.

I was able to study the next four hours without a slow connection--life was good. But why was the Internet working so well here? Well, this is what I came up with.

The HFAC is the arts buildings; people studying there are working on art. If they’re using a computer to assist with that art I’m confident they're using Photoshop or some other graphic design program. And for those not using a computer they're singing or playing a musical instrument.

After this realization I felt that I had found a goldmine. I actually am a bit hesitant to share this info here because I don’t want to find a lot of students in the HFAC studying for finals this semester. Oh well, for the greater good right?

Word of warning: make sure your computer is fully charged before studying here because there aren’t many outlets around. Also, make sure you bring headphones unless you enjoy hearing random outburst of song.

If you’ve discovered other great places to study especially during final weeks please comment and let us know what you know.

S.O.S. Drug

Places to go, S.O.S. Drug

If you’ve been in Provo and while and now and need to get out but don’t have a lot of time to travel far, head south eight miles to Springville and check out S.O.S Drug.

Why check out a drug store? Good question. Besides the fact that they’ve got ice cream, candy, and a killer milkshake, the place is super old-school! When you walk in you’ll feel like you’re in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.” S.O.S Drug is definitely a place that ought to be on your list of fun dating ideas.

My #1 reason for stopping at S.O.S. is to get a large, 32 oz Cherry Ironport for $1. This drink is rumored to be named after Porter Rockwell, which makes sense because you can only find the drink in Utah, Idaho and Nevada today. There are other places in the Provo area that you can get this drink at but none of them have been as tasty as the Cherry Ironport you can get at S.O.S.

Other reasons to stop in at S.O.S. Drug are for the candy and ice cream. They've got a large variety of ice cream all of which have that home made ice cream taste that you'd get from your grandmother's house when you were young. You'd expect to pay a lot of money for this type of ice cream but that's not the case! S.O.S. Drug's ice cream is cheap! if you're on a budget like most college students, this is definitely one to add to your fun dating ideas list.

Check out S.O.S. for the old-school pharmacy feel, cheap ice cream with lots of variety, and in my experience, the best Cherry Ironport around.

Snow Shoeing

Snow Shoeing, things to do Tired of not being able to run because it's snowing outside or the roads are too slippery? Looking for things to do or places to go? Now you can get your exercise climbing mountains with tennis rackets strapped to your feet. Utah is covered with trails that can be hiked in the Winter. Whether you like short hikes up mountains in order to have a great view, or day hikes that will take you to hidden lakes in the mountains, snow shoes can help you get there.
If you or your roommates don't have snowshoes, no worries, Outdoors unlimited in the Wilk lets you rent them for a day. Instead of spending a few bucks to sit down and watch a movie, get out with your friends or take a date and hike a mountain in the winter! The view of the city, the lake, or the mountains is sure to make the hike worth it. But be careful, this may give you more of a work-out than running ever did! You will want to do your stretches before you leave unless you want to be sore the next day. This is definitely one of the best things to do in winter.
My roommates just hiked Y mountain. No, not just to the Y, but to the top of the mountain. They had to take snow shoes and strap in once the snow got too deep. They got to the top and said that the view was amazing. Other friends heard later about their trip and are going to hike the mountain as well. So if you can't find a place to hike yet, Y mountain is a great choice. They said it took about 2.5 hours to get up to the top!

Extreme Things to do in Winter

If snowball fights, sledding, and building snowmen are no longer extreme enough things to do... join others in Provo city in building your own bobsled! BYU college students have come together in order to make their own bobsled and have attempted to ride it down the hills of Provo. Materials consist of wood or plastic and usually require some type of sheet metal for the bottom. Helmets are always highly suggested since this does count as an extreme sport. If you don't own any, you can try to buy some from Deseret Industries or rent them from Outdoors Unlimited. As seen in the video, the first time may not always be the most successful, but at least you will get the person that is video taping to laugh a lot.
So next time you think your life is boring and that you hate the snow, try something different... try something extreme. Grab some friends, some materials, and start to build you own bobsled and ride it down a hill! Who knows... You may even be as a good as these guys in their second video:

It looks like it is much easier to ride farther, the sooner that everyone is in the bobsled. The next time that your roommate says they are bored and asks for things to do that day... Suggest building a bobsled and see what they say! Remember to show these videos so that they will know that it is actually possible and will know what to expect.
I recently ran into the person that created this bobsled. He said that they ended up crashing and the bobsled was destroyed. So if you decide to get extreme and create one, you may want to remember that the helmets will definitely be required. Make sure that you start on smaller hills before you go big!

Sledding in the Canyon

Sledding in the Provo City Canyon
What are some things to do when it just snowed 6 inches outside and the only thing that you can think of doing is watching a movie? One option is to do what hundreds of others do... layer yourself in snow clothes, grab a sled, and head for hill. Popular places are Y mountain, Rock Canyon Park, and by Seven Peaks.
Make sure to bring your gloves and shovel in order to make jumps at the end if you feel like being extreme. You also will want to bring a camera so that others will believe you when you tell them what you did!
My church group recently had an activity up the canyon at a place where they supply the tubes and the tow rope. So if the part about walking up a hill 20 times, dragging a tube behind you doesn't sound too fun, try visiting Soldier Hollow up by Midway, UT. It is supposed to be an amazing hill with fun written all over it.
Whether you use a normal sled, a home made sled, an inter tube, or a piece of plastic, people continue to have fun finding ways to slide down the hill the fastest! Maybe your new invention can beat the normal "store bought" colored disc. So instead of watching a movie or sitting around thinking of things to do, grab some clothes, a friend, a sled and find a mountain. Make this winter something fun to remember!
This weekend is suppose to snow a lot, so make plans and get ready to hit the slopes!
